In the 5th match of IPL 2025, Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans in a thrilling contest by 11 runs. Punjab Kings set a massive target of 244 runs, and despite a strong start, Gujarat Titans fell short. The 15th over by Vyshak Vijay Kumar became the turning point of the match. Here are the three key reasons why Gujarat Titans lost.
1. The 15th and 16th Overs Changed the Game
At the end of 14 overs, Gujarat Titans were 169/2 and needed 75 runs from 36 balls. The match was still in their favor, but then Vyshak Vijay Kumar bowled a brilliant 15th over, conceding only 5 runs.
In the 16th over, Marco Jansen also bowled tightly, giving away just 8 runs. These two overs shifted the momentum towards Punjab Kings, and Gujarat started struggling.
2. No Boundaries for 21 Balls in the Death Overs
Sherfane Rutherford, who came in as an Impact Player, played a 46-run knock off 28 balls. However, he played 8 dot balls, which proved costly.
After hitting a six on the fourth ball of the 14th over, Gujarat failed to hit another boundary until the second ball of the 18th over. That means they went 21 consecutive legal balls without a boundary. In total, Gujarat faced 25 balls without hitting a four or six, which slowed their chase.
3. Vyshak Vijay Kumar’s Bowling Performance
While Gujarat’s batters were scoring freely against other bowlers, Vyshak Vijay Kumar turned the game around.
- He bowled the crucial 15th over, giving away only 5 runs.
- He applied pressure with wide yorkers and disciplined bowling.
- He finished with figures of 3 overs, 34 runs, but his tight bowling in key moments made a huge impact.
Player of the Match – Shreyas Iyer
Punjab Kings’ captain Shreyas Iyer was named Player of the Match for his outstanding 97 runs off 42 balls*.
He also praised Shashank Singh, who scored 44 runs off 16 balls*, helping Punjab reach 243 runs. Debutant Priyansh Arya also impressed with 47 runs off 23 balls.
Top Performers from Gujarat Titans
Despite losing, Gujarat had some brilliant batting performances:
- Sai Sudharsan – 74 runs off 41 balls (6 sixes, 5 fours)
- Shubman Gill – 33 runs off 14 balls
- Jos Buttler – 54 runs off 33 balls
- Sherfane Rutherford – 46 runs off 28 balls (3 sixes, 4 fours)
Even though Gujarat Titans came close, their slow middle overs and tight Punjab bowling led to their defeat.
