A nationwide Bharat Bandh (general strike) was called by national trade unions on Wednesday. The bandh was mainly against the new labour laws introduced by the government. The strike had a big impact in states like West Bengal and Kerala.

What Happened During the Bharat Bandh?

  • In Kerala, buses were stopped in places like Coimbatore and Kozhikode.
  • Public transport stayed off the roads, and many shops and malls were closed in Kottayam and Kochi.
  • Roads looked empty in several areas due to the strike.

Protests in West Bengal

  • In Kolkata, left-wing trade unions took out a march in Jadavpur to support the bandh.
  • At Jadavpur railway station, protesters created chaos by entering the station and trying to stop trains.
  • Train services were disrupted in many places.
  • In some areas of Kolkata, protesters set fire and blocked roads, but police reached on time and cleared the situation.

Why Are Trade Unions Protesting?

The strike is against the four new labour codes introduced by the central government. Unions believe:

  • Working hours will increase, and employers will get more power.
  • Workers will face more problems, including difficulty in going on strike.
  • It could also affect job security and salaries.

Which Trade Unions Supported the Bharat Bandh?

  1. Indian National Trade Union Congress
  2. Hind Mazdoor Sabha
  3. Centre of Indian Trade Unions
  4. All India Trade Union Congress
  5. Self Employed Women’s Association
  6. All India Central Council of Trade Unions
  7. United Trade Union Congress
  8. Labour Progressive Federation
  9. Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC)

According to reports, nearly 25 crore (250 million) workers took part in this strike. Work in banks and transport sectors was affected in many states.
