In Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh, police have arrested two members of a gang involved in illegal collection of money from truck drivers in the name of GST. Three other members managed to escape. The police provided this information on Saturday.

According to Sheeshgarh Police Stationโ€™s SHO Dharmendra Singh, on Thursday night, the Police Control Room received information that some people in a car were stopping trucks on Tanda Chhanga-Baheri Road and extorting money from drivers.

How the Arrest Happened

As soon as the Sheeshgarh police reached the spot and started surrounding the area, three suspects standing outside the car took advantage of the darkness and escaped. However, two suspects sitting inside the car were caught on the spot.

The arrested suspects were identified as Jagdeep Singh from Rampur district and Sanjay Das from Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. During the search operation, police recovered:

  • A country-made pistol
  • A handgun
  • Rs. 2,000 extorted from truck drivers
  • A laptop
  • Two mobile phones

Charges and Investigation

A case has been registered against all five suspects under charges of illegal collection and Arms Act. The car used in the crime has been seized, and search operations are ongoing for the three escaped suspects.

The two arrested suspects have been sent to jail after completing legal formalities.

How the Gang Operated

According to the police, Jagdeep Singh and Sanjay Das revealed the names of their three accomplices as Amritpal, Chetan, and Guddu. During interrogation, they admitted that they used to stop trucks coming from Uttarakhand and demand money in the name of checking GST bills. If a truck driver refused to pay, they would threaten them using guns.
