The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has become stricter regarding spam calls. TRAI has warned telecom companies that if they fail to follow the rules, they will have to pay a fine between ₹2 lakh and ₹10 lakh.
Millions of mobile users in India face spam calls and messages daily. Now, TRAI’s new rules aim to reduce this problem.
Telecom Companies Must Track Spam Calls in Real-Time
TRAI has instructed all telecom operators to analyze the pattern of spam calls and messages. They must monitor:
✔ High call volume
✔ Short call duration
✔ Unusual incoming vs. outgoing call ratio
Telecom companies must report the total number of spam calls received on any number. If they fail to do so, they will be penalized:
🔴 First violation – ₹2 lakh fine
🔴 Second violation – ₹5 lakh fine
🔴 Repeated violations – ₹10 lakh fine per case
No More Spam Calls from 10-Digit Numbers
To improve transparency, TRAI has banned 10-digit numbers for commercial marketing calls. Instead:
📞 Promotional calls will use “140” series
📞 Transactional and service calls will use “1600” series
Easier Complaint Process for Users
Now, users can easily report spam calls without registering communication preferences. These new rules will help reduce unwanted calls and improve user experience. 📵🚀
