Cyclone Fengal has started affecting parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with heavy rains causing problems for people in many areas. Chennai Airport has suspended flight services, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the cyclone, currently over the Bay of Bengal, may make landfall in Puducherry today (November 30, 2024).
Schools Closed, Work-from-Home Advised
The Tamil Nadu government has declared holidays for all educational institutions across the state. IT companies have been requested to allow employees to work from home. Public transport services on East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road will remain suspended this afternoon.
CM Stalin Reviews Preparations
Ahead of the cyclone’s landfall, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the disaster management control room in Chennai to review preparedness. State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran held a meeting to ensure readiness and advised people to avoid beaches and amusement parks.
471 People Shifted to Relief Centers
In coastal areas, 471 people from 164 families have been moved to six relief centers in Tiruvallur and Nagapattinam districts. Boats, generators, motor pumps, and other necessary equipment have been kept ready. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state rescue teams have been deployed in vulnerable regions.
Flights Disrupted at Chennai Airport
Heavy rains have disrupted operations at Chennai Airport, with 22 flights cancelled and three diverted. A Fit Air flight from Colombo and two Indigo flights from Hyderabad and Abu Dhabi were redirected to other destinations.
Heavy Rain Forecast Till December 3
IMD predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in interior Tamil Nadu on December 1, with similar conditions continuing in parts of the state on December 2 and 3.
SMS Alerts Sent to Puducherry Residents
The Puducherry administration has sent SMS alerts to around 1.2 million residents, warning them to stay safe indoors as the cyclone approaches. District Collector A. Kulothungan reviewed the situation with officials from various departments. Residents can call toll-free numbers 112 and 1077 or WhatsApp at 9488981070 for emergency assistance.
