UP By-election 2024: The Samajwadi Party (SP) has announced candidates for six seats in the upcoming by-elections in Uttar Pradesh. SP released the list just a day after the Haryana Assembly elections were completed. This sudden move has heated up the political scene in Uttar Pradesh. The reason behind announcing the candidates has also come forward.
SP leader and MLA Ravidas Mehrotra said, “Samajwadi Party has been leading in defeating the BJP on all 6 seats. Talks are ongoing with Congress for the other 4 seats, and we hope to form an alliance.”
Ravidas Mehrotra, who is considered close to Akhilesh Yadav, stated, “If Congress had formed an alliance with SP and AAP in Haryana, the INDIA alliance would have been in power today. Congress didn’t give a single seat to SP in Haryana, effectively handing over the state to the BJP. In UP, we want to defeat the BJP in the by-elections, so we have declared candidates for 6 seats.”
Who are the Candidates and from Which Seats?
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has fielded Tej Pratap from the Karhal seat. He was the MLA from this seat in 2022. After he was elected as an MP, the seat became vacant. In the list released on Wednesday, SP announced Naseem Solanki from the Sisamau assembly seat, Mustafa Siddiqui from Phulpur, Ajit Prasad from Milkipur, Shobhavati Verma from Katehri, and Dr. Jyoti Bind from the Manjhanwa assembly seat.

Out of the six seats for which SP has announced candidates, two seats were won by the BJP in the 2022 Assembly elections—Phulpur and Manjhanwa. Congress had also expressed interest in contesting these seats under the alliance, but SP’s announcement of candidates has made the contest more interesting.
