Algerian female boxer Imane Khelif won a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics despite being at the center of gender controversies. Khelif won the gold medal in the women’s 66 kg weight category by defeating China’s Yang Liu.
Imane Khelif had faced controversy due to allegations that she might be biologically male. Despite these issues, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed her to compete, stating that she met the necessary standards.
Khelif’s performance in the tournament was dominant. In the 16th round match against Italy’s Angela Carini, Carini quit the fight within seconds, leaving the ring. This allowed Khelif to win all her matches leading up to the final in a one-sided manner.
In the quarter-finals, Khelif defeated Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamari 5-0 to advance to the semi-finals. She then beat Thailand’s Janjem Suwannafang 5-0 in the semi-finals. In the final, Khelif secured the gold medal by defeating Yang Liu of China with a score of 5-0.
Notably, Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 World Boxing Championships because she failed to meet gender eligibility criteria. Despite this setback, she achieved victory at the Olympics.
