A tragic train accident occurred in Sahibganj, Barhait, Jharkhand, where two goods trains collided head-on, resulting in the death of both loco pilots. The collision was so severe that both train engines were completely destroyed and caught fire. One goods train was stationary on the track when another speeding goods train entered the same track, causing the accident. This raises serious questions: How did two trains end up on the same track at the same time?
What Went Wrong? Official Speaks Out
Shantanu Das, Assistant General Manager of NTPC, spoke to news agency IANS about the incident. He stated:
- “An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
- It appears that the controller made a mistake while setting the point (track direction).
- The Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) is seriously injured and his statement will be taken as part of the investigation.
Challenges in Clearing the Track
Mr. Das also mentioned the challenges in removing the heavy locomotives from the track.
- Ordinary cranes cannot lift such heavy engines.
- Special equipment will be needed to clear the track, which may take some time.
Rescue Operations Underway
After the accident, railway officials, police, and the fire brigade quickly reached the site and began rescue operations.
- After extinguishing the fire, the bodies of the loco pilots were recovered.
- One body was taken to the morgue, while the other remained stuck in the engine for a long time.
- The ALP from one of the goods trains was severely injured.
Injuries and Treatment
The accident injured four people, including railway workers and a CISF officer.
- All injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Barhait Community Health Center.
Investigation to Determine Accountability
The official investigation will focus on identifying the exact cause of the accident. The role of the controller in directing trains onto the same track is a key point of concern.
The railways department and authorities are expected to take strict actions based on the investigation findings to prevent such incidents in the future.
