New Rule to Be Effective Next Session

According to a PTI report, the rule ending the Friday prayer break for Muslim legislators will be enforced from the next session. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X that by ending the two-hour Friday break, the Assam Assembly is prioritizing productivity and removing a colonial-era practice. He noted that the break was introduced in 1937 by Muslim League leader Syed Sadhulla.

Sarma emphasized that the assembly should function without religious bias. Previously, Assam had a tradition of a two-hour break every Friday from 12 PM to 2 PM. AIUDF MLA Majibur Rahman accused Chief Minister Sarma of trying to break the traditions of the assembly.
